My sister lives down south and the AC unit in her living room finally checked out. I was planning on getting her a really cool Christmas present, but, instead, decided to stick to being the practical guy that I am. That's right, I sent her this window unit as an early xmas present. When she recently called me, I was expecting to hear moaning and groaning about what a boring gift I sent. Turns out, the AC was a great gift. My sister said she can now actually hear the TV when the AC is running because it's so quiet and the motor turns itself on and off to keep the room at a constant temperature. She even said it was easy to install, which was one of my biggest concerns. Overall, I'd say best bang for your buck!

My parents own a home in Florida and they recently turned the walk-in attic into a fourth bedroom/guest quarters. Seemed like a fabulous idea until you are the one sleeping up there, in the HEAT! Since I have been spending so much time in the new bedroom, I knew I had to do something........ buy a window AC!!! I didn't want to spend a lot of money since it's not my permanent residence, so this AC was perfect. I wasn't expecting any miracles since it's a small unit attempting to cool a large open space, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. I have purchased quite a few window air conditioners, but the FRA054XT7 turned out to be exactly what I have been looking for. Even though it's a small unit, it still does a great job of cooling the room. It has easy-to-use electronic controls, a remote, and it's very quiet. Not to mention that it was really easy to install! lite weight, quiet when running, comes with vinyl slide out pannels for left and right sides, easy install in 36 inch wide window opening, plug into any 110 volt outlet, uses about 4 amps, the front pannel below the air outlet folds down on hinges for easy filter access. perfect to cool one room all the time, or keep in garage and use when the central air breaks down on friday and parts aren't available until monday. one cool room is better than no cool room. home depot has it under their housebrand of hampton bay for eighty five dollars with a five year warranty. keep cool.

While not the most feature-rich air conditioner (there's nothing electronic whatsoever about the thermostat and fan controls), it certainly gets the job done for cheap.
Cools a single room reasonably, and in multiples of 2 or 3, it can take on most entire apartments.

I purchased this window air conditioner at a Southern California Walmart in July, 2003 for $125. After lugging it home, I installed it in my bedroom(15X15)- window. It worked well during that summer, but now (June, 2004) it no longer cools sufficiently - it has become more like a window fan. I cycled it off and on every month during the past winter (Southern California style)as advised in the included instruction manual. The manual states a one year free maintenance guarantee, but doesn't tell you about the $50/hour diagnostic charge levied by their affiliated independent service organization. I am very disappointed with this Goldstar unit, and would definitely not purchase another. I previously owned a GE 5000 btu model and it was much more durable.

I spent quite a bit of time researching A/C before purchasing. We live in Oregon and it doesn't get too hot but there's a month or two in the summer where the heat and humidity get oppressive in the house. I wanted an inexpensive, small, window A/C to increase the comfort. I wanted something small enough that I can store it the other 10 months.
So, after much research I ordered this model. I was going to get the 6K BTU model with the electronic controls but I figured I would get something super cheap and if it didn't work I could use it as a single room cooler. Shipped free which makes this a pretty good deal. Arrived in about a week.
Installation was easy, following the instructions in the manual. I did have to install and remove the A/C about 3 times to get all the sealing right. I got it hoping it would keep my apartment cool-ER. I expected it to keep it comfortable, not cold. I also had a bit of a problem with size. The only window that opens in my house is a vertical sliding window, which Air Conditioners I can afford, aren't made for. Once I received it, I started to assemble and install. Originally I was going to leave the extensions off, since my window was only 18 inches wide, but after I got it and thought about it more, I realized they could still help keep it supported. So I put them on. They are about an inch inside the window, to help it from falling out. Also, I originally hoped to buy some wood and put that above it, but once I saw how sturdy it was with just the extensions, I put cardboard above it and plastic taped around the edges with duct tape. I bought this a/c mainly because of the price. It has completely exceeded my expectations. It is cooling three rooms in the downstairs of our house (about 600 sq ft). And I have yet to change it over to "high cool". It's also quieter than I expected. Well worth it's low price!
